Biomechanical Assessments
A Biomechanical assessment uses up-to-date podiatric knowledge with leading technology to assess and identify the underlying causes of common foot problems.
A Biomechanical assessment includes a non weight bearing assessment of joint range of movement, muscle testing and a static assessment of your posture. It also includes walking and/or running gait analysis using digital video equipment to allow in-depth study of any abnormalities found and plantar pressure measurement to allow the Podiatrist to actually see the forces under your feet as you stand and walk, or run. A footwear assessment is also included. After the assessment, a treatment plan is then given and often includes the use of orthotics or a shoe recommendation.
A Biomechanical Assessment is required for:
- Knee Pain
- Shin Pain
- Ankle Pain
- Achilles Pain
- Heel Pain (Plantar Fasciitis)
- Arch Pain
- Forefoot Pain
Orthotics
Orthotics sit under your feet. They are prescribed after a biomechanical assessment by a Foot Mechanics Podiatrist and are used to improve foot function, support the foot as the foundation for the body and to redistribute forces through the foot and lower limb.Foot Mechanics uses two types of orthotics:
1. CUSTOMISED FOOT ORTHOTICS
Customised Orthotics are prefabricated and held in stock at the clinics. They are matched to your foot size and your footwear. The orthotic is then customised to achieve the therapeutic effect the Podiatrist has identified as necessary.
2. PRESCRIPTION CUSTOM FOOT ORTHOTICS
Prescription Custom Foot Orthotics are custom made using digital cad/cam technology. Foot Mechanics uses a digital lab to manufacture all prescription custom foot orthotics. The lab uses cad/cam technology to produce an orthotic that is the perfect shape, maximising comfort and functionality.
Foot Mechanics Podiatrists have a reputation amongst health professionals as being the experts in biomechanical assessment and orthotic prescription. Many factors are considered prior to prescribing orthotics including:
- Site of injury or problem
- Type of injury or problem
- Degree of correction needed
- Activity level
- Type of activity
- Body Weight
- Footwear
- Patient convenience and time frames
Basic Footwear Advice
There are many different types of shoes that are available on the market but the question that is constantly asked is “What type of shoes are right for me?” and “How do I know if it is a good shoe?”The answer depends on what the shoe is going to be used for. For example:
- The level of activity e.g. competitive or social
- The type of activity you need the shoe for
- Your foot type
- Existing foot problems
- Your running style
A good shoe is designed to give your feet protection and to help prevent injury. Foot Mechanics Podiatrists are trained to help fit shoes. We use a 14 point fitting system that will help ensure you get the best fitting shoes possible.
